How Rapid Roofing Began from Our President, Gary Petersen

Some of my earliest memories as a young boy involve tagging along to work with my grandfather, who was the owner of a local roofing and hardware distribution company (which is still run by his sons today). From a very young age, I was fascinated by how an asphalt mat with granules stuck to it could possibly keep water out of a house. He would try to explain, but it wasn’t until much later in life that I truly understood the magic of it all.

Throughout high school, I worked in his shingle yard, getting the ridge load trucks ready and loading contractors up with their orders. During this time, I had the chance to observe a vast array of roofing companies. I could sense who enjoyed what they were doing and those who did not, but no matter where they fell on that spectrum, one thing was clear—it appeared to be a labor-intensive occupation.

After high school, I explored various sales jobs, but I couldn’t seem to find my niche. It was during this time that my older brother started his own roofing company. Eager for a change, I asked if he could use some help. He brought me on board, and over the next decade, he showed me the ins and outs of the business. After years of laboring on roofs, he became busy enough to need a business manager. I was thrilled when he offered me the job.

Over the next several years, I learned that regardless of the type of job—be it residential, new construction, or commercial—communication with the customer is the key to a successful business. So, equipped with the experience I needed and with the unwavering support of my wife, in 2009, we embarked on our own journey and started Rapid Roofing.
